The spirit of creation is the spirit of contradiction. It is the breakthrough of appearances toward an unknown reality.
Joan Cocteau
At first, I planned to share the meaning of this quote from my own perspective. Instead, I’d like to hear what this means to you. J
And since I substituted the hug video for weekend art and music, I’ll take a small bit of today to share this painting called A Writer. Jan Ekels painted this work in 1784.
Okay, this is a wonderful picture and I’ve tried and tried to get it here bigger. If you’d like to see it in detail, click here. You can even pull it up extra large on this page.
It is not a bad idea to get in the habit of writing down one’s thoughts. It saves one having to bother anyone else with them.

Now this one cracks me up. Most of the people who cruise my little piece of the net blog themselves. We share. We post jokes and quizzes, share stories about what it’s like to face this blank computer screen day after day. But basically, we’re jumping onto a public forum and blabbing our innermost thoughts with well… everyone. I think people do this for lots of very different reasons. Publicity, the need to share political or emotional thoughts… maybe even loneliness.
Some are particularly witty and have important things to say. There are a lot of wonderfully talented bloggers out there and I get a kick out of visiting their worlds. I love seeing life through their eyes. And every now and then, I learn a little something new or am gifted with a keen insight into what makes them the way they are.
People fascinate me.
Um…You think? Aren’t most writers fascinated by people? Isn’t it like a prerequisite?
Why I got into this gig?
One: To publicize any writing sales. Since I’m spending most of my work time on book-length manuscripts, those are going to be a little sporadic. But I guarantee you’ll hear it here loud and clear when they do fall into my lap. In fact, I may have to do another little challenge here to get some short story topic ideas. <g>
Two: To network with other writers and bloggers. To share my thoughts and experiences as a writer. To hear the different perspectives from others. To help celebrate my friends’ writing sales as well as help promote their work. In fact, one of my closest friends has her first book coming out this week and I’ll be shouting it from the rooftops.
Three: To develop a thicker skin. I’m in a tough business for a sensitive. If I can open my mouth here and get used to both positive and negative reaction, I might possibly handle bad reviews better. Some of us are a little afraid of success and frankly, that gets old. I’m so freaking ready for it… FINALLY.
Four: To promote my snarky store for writers and get feedback on the designs. Be honest! It can be hard to see flaws in our own work.
Five: To hopefully inspire another writer to jump out there and be less afraid. To make them think. To show them that someone else has doubts or bouts of weirdness and yet, they still forge ahead. They’re still trying to make a difference in their own small way.
So, I have my reasons. Probably more than I can think of right now. Thing is, I need to get back to that fiction writing. The biggest thing I’ve learned about being a writer is… The job never ends. <g>
