I went to bed early for once and actually slept. I think my strange moodiness lately has been due to acute insomnia. There is nothing like lying in a bed in a dark room knowing that if you don’t sleep the next day won’t be any better. You can hear all sorts of interesting things during these hours. Dogs barking, squirrels chattering, odd thumps and whistles. Here lately, the wind has been a furocious beast that screams and rattles the rooftops.
I actually awakened early and was really awake. Not the sluggish “God- another-day” awake of usual. I drank coffee and watched a movie. The Madness of King George. Very good movie but it broke my heart. What passed as medicine in those days was more terrifying than any scary movie ever could be.
This is a fictional account of a true story, but it made me curious. I looked up King George to find out if any studies have been done with today’s medicine to help understand what happened there. With so many underhanded machinations that go on in government and royal families, I was sure he was being poisoned.
But it might not have been intentional.

Arsenic in the skin creams, in the very medicine used to treat him. Plus, they discovered signs of porphyria.
Or… could he maybe have suffered from insomnia? I swear, there are days when I’ve felt a tad bit mad…
