So… I came up with a story idea for the contest. Nothing like the last freakin’ minute. It’s due Monday and I brainstormed with a coworker Friday who had a great idea for the actual apocalyptic disaster. But when I went off on the story, she gave me that look. You know the one.
How can you come up with such a horrific idea?
It. Is. Horrific.
Deliciously so.
Since my plans for today fell through, I rubbed my hands together with glee, cleaned the crap out of my house so I wouldn’t be distracted, then jumped into the research. Spent WAY too long on that.
Researching end of civilization scenarios takes you into some of the most interesting websites. Some scary, but most of them lured me in with fascinating stories of evolutionary theory and possible future survival strategies. I found myself sucked into too much research. Especially when I started reading “population bottleneck” articles, mostly by Stanley Ambrose. My wanderings took me into different development theories and even to the book, Galapagos, by Kurt Vonnegut. I’ve never read it, but I want to now. Anyone read it?
I’m going to try and get the rough of the story done tonight. I normally let a story sit at least a week or so before draft two, but we’ll see if I can scrounge up a decent entry. If not, I’ll leave it a week and then just submit it the regular way. 🙂
