Ever had a stream of really strange bad luck?
I’m not a person who believes in luck, fate or anything not entirely logical. Oh, I used to. Just had a couple of rough years that kind of ripped away my fantastical side.
My characters do still believe and they revel in their mythological worlds of monsters and mayhem.
But me? Nah. I’m like Spock. Without the ears. (Though… they would be cool.) I find living through my characters exhilarating–they lead much more interesting lives.
Anyway, this was one rough week. I’ve been fighting that wicked cold–it finally settled into my chest today and feels like it set up some sort of oven. Every breath burns like crazy. Makes me dizzy.
But, despite being sick and missing my very good friend, Christy’s, birthday Wednesday, I put in some long hours on a project. The company I do work for needed it desperately. So, on Thursday, I take in the big Maxtor drive and the damn thing somehow died between my house and the office. Exhausted from the cold and (yeah, waiting for agent responses makes you feel slightly off all the time) I felt at my wits end.
Then yesterday, I hear several pieces of bad news. I was really in the dumps.
The hubby, who is finishing my photo project because of the deadlines on this other work, brings home the brand new Toshiba laptop and it wouldn’t start. He had been backing up the photos, but ran out of room, so about 1500 pictures might be lost.
We promised friends we’d go to the monthly wine share, so we left the dead laptop on the kitchen table, feeling just terrible about the computer equipment that kept breaking and about the bad news.
While at the wine share, there’s this horrible noise. We’re in a beautiful antique shop, wandering the aisles with glasses of merlot or cabernet, and a man rushes in to find the owners of an unfortunate vehicle. That’s us.
A bus took off the back corner of our vehicle and ran!!!
So the hubby spent time with the two cops who showed up, all of them standing in the freezing mist. Seems they felt this would be a dead end. Luckily two witnesses saw the accident and one came back to give us the tag number and her phone number. I may send her a Christmas gift!
We still went out afterward with the friends–laughing at this point because you reach a level of bad news that just morphs into hilarity. I know, weird. I set aside the wine, having only tried two kinds–I just felt I needed my wits. Wondered if anything else could happen.
While out, my babysitting sixteen year-old gets dropped off and finds she has the wrong key. And no coat. It was freezing last night and she gets nervous outside in the dark on her own, so she’s standing like this beautiful beacon of bait under our Christmas lights. Ack! So we raced home to let the blue-lipped sweetie inside.
I turn on the laptop. Still dead. We sooooo did not want to tell my employer we’d somehow ruined another expensive piece of computer equipment, so I researched the Net. I find this is a big problem with Toshiba laptops. Techs said to pull out the battery for a minute or two, then put it back. It worked!
So, what did we do then? We both smiled and decided to celebrate the one good thing instead of dwelling on the many bad. 🙂
This weekend, I’m laid up pretty sick, but I have to redo the entire project that was lost. So, send me some good thoughts. I’m gonna need them.
