The next couple of weeks will be devoted to getting more agent queries together. (Okay and the million and one back to school things parents’ suffer through…)
I have a list of agents I like. One at the top and I still hope I have a chance with her, but over and over at the conference, I heard agents say it’s better to mass query at this stage. I gave my top choice a good month’s head start because she really seems to love urban fantasy and I soooo want to work with someone who shares my love of the genre. (But I also found some typos on my proposal and realized I quick- fixed some of my CP’s suggestions and forgot to wrap up the verb tenses. Twice. NOT the best first impression there. ARGH. )
Yeah, I do think that something as small as a couple of mixed verb tenses can be enough to turn an agent off. Could possibly keep her from reading further. There’s a reason people say this is a tough business.
CUZ IT IS.
With so many writers out there grasping for positions, only the best foot forward will do.
So, since I met a few other agents at the conference and one in particular who seemed pretty interested, I’m going to go ahead and query her as well.
Cross all your virtual fingers. <g>
Thing is, I’m glad I’ve found work I can do at home, but I do look forward to getting back to my 3000 words a day schedule. I’d really hit my stride on that and I don’t want to lose it. I LOVED the way it felt at the end of the day when I knew I’d reached my goal. I loved being able to spend time with the kiddos without that nagging word count beating a tattoo in the back of my head. I loved having the time to cook. But I really enjoyed the free evenings after the kids were off to bed. To watch movies with the hubby or read. That down time is important. Helps get the mind jumping and ready to jump back into the manuscript the next morning.
As it is now, reading and cooking have been pushed aside. I need to write at night but boy, tackling that kind of word count after hours in a chair at a computer screen is a challenge. One I’ll probably adjust to when I’m more used to this job. In fact, I’m sure I will. Right now, it’s a little disheartening sometimes.
I propped up Mooncalled and Bloodbound on my desk today. Two of my favorite books, of course, but I’m hoping that the constant, visual reminder of this dream of mine will keep me on my toes… or actually, off of them if I’m going to face that office chair a few hours more each night. 🙂
